Under-19 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-7 Tyrrellspass 1-10.

No joy for Mullingar Shamrocks in this opening game of the 2021 Under-19 Football Championship. Shamrocks started brightly and points from Mark Flynn and Brian Farrell opened the scoring; Zach Aherne followed with two fine points, one with the right foot and one with the left before a glorious pass by Brian Farrell sent Mark Shaw through for the opening goal. Tyrrellspass kept in touch by scoring five points and at the first water break the scoreboard read 1-4 to 0-5. Unfortunately, Shamrocks’ scoring rate grew to a halt at this stage and twenty-five minutes elapsed before we troubled the umpires again. Emmett Walsh pointed a 45 and Brian Farrell added a suspicious looking point but a brilliant strike by Jamie Corcoran proved to be the crucial score for Tyrrellspass who led at the end of the third quarter 1-9 to 1-6. Nathan Foxe saved brilliantly from Mark Flynn. Zach Aherne kicked the final score for Shamrocks; a Harry Murphy pointed 45 completed the Tyrrellspass scoring who had three points to spare at the final whistle.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Seán Hynes; Ciaran Looby, Matthew Siode, Rory Hickey; Rory O’ Sullivan Sexton (Ciaran Kiernan), Mark Flynn (0-1), Niall Ouchbakou (Tom Hickey); Brian Farrell (0-2), Emmett Walsh (0-1); Matthew Clinton, Andrew Shaw, William Adzonga; Mark Shaw (1-0) [Daragh Hughes], Zach Aherne (1-0), Daithí Mairtín (Conor Fagan).
