Under-16 Football Championship: Lilliput Gaels 5-11 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-4
A bad night at the office for our Under-16 footballers as they were comprehensively beaten by a stronger and more skillful Lilliput Gaels side. Shamrocks trailed by 2-5 to 1-2 at the interval after Jack Favier and Shay Leavy exchanged goals in the early stages of the game (and the Lilliput goal was a gift). That was as good as it got for Shamrocks as the compendium of errors included two missed tap-over free kicks.
A chance to split the deficit after the restart was missed when a the Lilliput Gaels goalkeeper saved a penalty and the ball was worked downfield and finished to the net by Conor O'Neill. A six point swing. Conor Matthews scored Shamrocks second goal.
Shay Leavy suffered what appeared to be a bad hand injury in the final minutes and we wish Shay a speedy recovery.
At least the rain cleared up before the game started and held off until the final minutes, it wasn't all bad on the night.
