Now is an appropriate time to look back at our previous All-Ireland Scór successes.
After years of disappointment and heartbreak, a coveted All-Ireland Scór title was finally brought back to Springfield in 2006 when the Mullingar Shamrocks ballad group gained the judges verdict in the Scór na nÓg finals held in Athlone. Rory Hughes, Jemma McNamee, Aoife Gavin, Mark Irwin and Katie McCarthy impressed the judges with their singing of Bríd Óg ní Mhaille and The Flower of Magherally and won the first All-Ireland for the club.
In 2007 an All-Ireland Scór double was the reward for the energy invested in the annual competition by the club’s Scór committee led by Detty. Mary Hughes performed John Cowley’s The First Shall be Last and the Last Shall be First, in Killarney, to win the All-Ireland Senior title in the Recitation section. Katie McCarthy completed an All-Ireland Scór na nÓg double earlier in the year with a brilliant win in the Solo Singing section with a fantastic rendition of Brid Óg ní Mhaille.
After three losing All-Ireland final appearances, the club’s Novelty Act team finally landed the All-Ireland Senior Scór title in 2010 when they won performing their own production Curtain Up which ironically poked some fun at the Scór novelty act concept and its judges. Mary T. Irwin, Mary Hughes, Paul Doolin, Joe Earley, Gemma McNamee and two noted football corner-backs, Robert Ryan and Aaron Purcell performed the original Paul Doolin sketch to perfection. Mary Hughes was winning her third All-Ireland medal as she previously won a Recitiation title representing Longford.
In 2015, a new Novelty Act troupe took the stage and won a second Scór Sinsear title for the club with the Paul Doolin scripted Bring Back the Sketch. Martin Coyne, Paul McDermott, Robert Ryan, Paul and Rebecca Doolin and Joe Earley, were the ones on the stage on this occasion. Paul Doolin had the privilege of winning a Scór title with his daughter Rebecca and Robert Ryan retained his undefeated Scór record. retained his unbeaten record as he competed for the second time winning Westmeath,Leinster and All-Ireland titles on each occasion.
Our unluckiest All-Ireland finalists have been the various Figure Dancing groups who won several Leinster titles but the coveted All-Ireland title escaped them.
