The Late Lena Smith
The members and executive of Mullingar Shamrocks extend their deepest sympathies to the Smyth family, Dublin Road, Mullingar on the passing of Lena Smith on Thursday morning.
In particular, sympathy is expressed to her children Ann, Elizabeth, John, Helen, Aidan and Lena’s 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The Smyth family’s connection to the GAA and Shamrocks is an illustrious and varied one. (Lena’s late husband John won a senior championship medal in 1948 with St. Loman’s and also represented Westmeath at senior level as a noted custodian).
Their eldest daughter Ann (Caulfield) won an All-Ireland Scór singing title representing The Downs in 1978. Their eldest son John played for Shamrocks in the 1980s and was a member of the 1988 Intermediate championship winning side. John’s musical talents have also featured in our recent fundraising efforts, most notably his memorable role in Les Miserable.
Lena’s granddaughters Clare and Eva also have strong Shamrocks’ connections with Clare’s husband Joe Kenny a current selector with our senior team and Eva’s husband Conn O’ Hanlon a playing member of our senior side. Three of Lena’s great grandchildren, Anna and Rachel Kenny and Cormac O’ Hanlon are active members of our SeamrÓigí squads.
Lena reposes at Gilsenan’s Funeral Home on Friday 19 September from 4 pm to 6 pm with removal to the Cathedral of Christ the King arriving at 6.30 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday 20 September at 11.00 am. Burial afterwards in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Marlinstown.
